Fake IDs in Maryland

A Growing Problem

Like other states across the country, Maryland is grappling with a growing number of counterfeit IDs, either presented in person or through digital images. The following examples illustrate how easy it is to obtain fake IDs in Maryland, which are often associated with illegal underage alcohol purchases and financial fraud.

Maryland Alcohol Sales and Service Guidelines

Minimum age for consumption: 21, with some exceptions.

- Minimum age for service: 18

- Minimum age for bartending: 18

No one under 21 may purchase alcoholic beverages during an enforcement action.

Penalties for selling or serving alcohol to a minor: In Maryland, the sale of alcohol to a minor is prohibited under Maryland Alcoholic Beverages Section 12-108. Depending on the circumstances, penalties may include fines, jail time, or the revocation or suspension of a license.

For example, Garrett County has the following guidelines for sales to minors:

First offense: $300 fine and a warning letter.

Second offense: $500 fine and possible suspension of up to 10 days.

Third offense: $1,000 fine and possible suspension of up to 30 days.

Fourth offense: Maximum fine and suspension of up to one year.

Generally, fines for misdemeanors are usually between $500 and $1,000, but depending on the circumstances, the fines can be higher. Individuals convicted of a crime may also be sentenced to probation and required to complete community service or other related service.
